Volunteers at a waterway

What Can You Learn

Appropriate training will always be given for all tasks. We may sometimes be looking for somebody with a lot of experience who can be given some additional training in specific areas whereas other opportunities will come with all the training you'll need.

Here are a couple of examples:

  • If we're looking for a volunteer to paint a lock gate or direct people at a public event, the training you need will be given within an hour of starting of the task. As well as enjoying yourself we hope that you'll learn some new skills even though high levels of training aren't necessary to undertake the task.

  • If we're looking for a volunteer to help with leading or assisting with school visits, we aren't necessarily looking for a teacher. What's really needed are good communication skills and a passion for the waterways to share with the children. We would provide training in how to work with and manage children as well as all the detailed knowledge that you would need to lead the activity. Children's questions can vary from: "where were those bricks made" to: "is there a shark in here? My dad told me there is." We'll do our best to equip you to answer both of these!

  • If we're looking for a volunteer to assist or lead engineering tasks, we can't offer them a degree in engineering. We'd be looking for a trained engineer with some spare time on their hands where we can offer training in specific areas of waterway engineering, safety or heritage and environmental management.
