British Waterway - Volunteer Boat Master, Anderton Boat Lift
This is a new and exciting volunteer role to get out and about on a boat at one of the Inland Waterways most iconic symbols.
Anderton Boat lift near Northwich in Cheshire is a master piece of Industrial engineering fully restored to operational use and today a major visitor destination.
The Boat Master role is responsible for handling the 56 seat trip boat Edwin Clark through the lift from the Canal to the River Weaver below.
This will include helping passengers on board and giving the commentary of the trip over the public announcement system.
Whilst not a heavy practical task, you will need to be physically fit to spend a day helping with the boat. You need to be happy working within a team and have a good understanding of water safety.
You should be friendly and enjoy working with the public.
You will need to hold a current Tier 2 Boat Master certificate

British Waterways - Archives Angel
The Waterways Archive collects, preserves and makes publicly available records relating to our inland waterways. These include plans, drawings, accounts, photographs and letters. At the core of the collection are the archives of British Waterways and the early canal companies, which trace the history of Britain�s inland waterways back to its very roots in the 17th century.

British Waterways - Bicentenary Events Coordinator, Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre
2011 is the Bicentenary year at Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre and we are looking for a committed volunteer to help us celebrate this. You will plan and deliver a programme of vibrant events and activities to engage both locals and visitors from further afield, to help celebrate the past successes of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre and encourange support for its continued success well into the next two hundred years.

British Waterways - Biodiversity Records Coordinator
This role will be directly linked to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal Community Project. The main objective of this project is to raise awareness and understanding of the local heritage and biodiversity along the 11 miles of canal from Llantysilio to Chirk Bank. The project engages with local schools, communities groups / individuals along this corridor.
The Llangollen Canal has some fantastic wildlife as well as heritage; especially Water Voles, Bats and Otters that need to be recorded to identify their locations protect them & improve their habitat.
This role is to collate wildlife and species records from community awareness events held over the past few months and also develop more similar activities along the 11 mile canal corridor.
It also involves:
-Promoting the importance of wildlife survey amongst the general public.
-Accept and collate wildlife sighting reports from Wardens
-Keep species records on file

British Waterways - Booking Office Assistant
The Anderton Boat Lift is a busy tourist attraction which sees coach tours and school parties visiting on a very regular basis. Help is needed in the booking office and there is opportunity to be involved with all aspects of this busy office including answering the telephone, making bookings, mail outs, and designing leaflets. The office is friendly and volunteers would be in a supportive environment where there is opportunity to undertake larger projects if and when they feel ready.

British Waterways - Cafe Assistant, Anderton Boat Lift
The only working Victorian vertical boat lift in Britain is home to a great visitor centre, attracting 120 thousand visitors each year. As a Volunteer Cafe Assistant you will be serving customers and assisting with food preparation at this busy visitor centre. The role includes manning the till, preparing and serving a range of food and drinks and ensuring the cafe area and kitchen are kept clean and well presented at all times.
You will be part of a small busy team and will help visitors to gain maximum enjoyment from their visit to Anderton Boat Lift & Visitor Centre.

British Waterways - Customer Service and Administration Volunteer
Our busy British Waterways project office in Ellesmere Shropshire is in need of a volunteer over the summer months to help things run smoothly and give our customers a good standard of service. British Waterways is the organisation that cares for 2,200 miles of the country's canals and rivers and licenses thousands of boats every year. You will be responsible for dealing with enquiries face-to-face and over the phone which will include taking bookings for training events. You will also help with collecting the project outputs such as timesheets.
This is Ellesmere in Shropshire not Ellesmere Port.

British Waterways - Customer Service Superstar
Our busy British Waterways office in Northwich is in need of a volunteer over the summer months to help things run smoothly and give our customers a good standard of service. British Waterways is the organisation that cares for 2,200 miles of the country's canals and rivers and licenses thousands of boats every year. As a volunteer you'll be situated at the front desk and be the first point of contact for our visitors so you'll need to have good communication skills and a winning smile. You will be responsible for dealing with enquiries face-to-face and over the phone which will include boaters' booking passages through locks and licensing enquiries. You will also help visitors sign in, manage the enquiries email inbox and undertake a range of administrative duties.

British Waterways - Customer Services Administrator
You will be a key member of this busy waterway administration team. Through this role you will liaise with a variety of internal and external customers and carry out a diverse range of tasks, including handling enquiries and carrying out front of house customer service tasks, taking bookings from boaters for the waterways busiest links (Liverpool and Ribble Link) and locks and administering a wide range of event applications from external organisations.
This role is ongoing,ideally you will be able to give a regular commitment over a period of around 6 months to be able to fully understand all aspects of the role and gain the most from this experience.
We are looking for someone to give their time for at least one day per week, this is flexible to suit the volunteer and may consist of one full day or fewer hours spread throughout the week. There is the potential for this to be extended.

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) is holding its 2010 National Festival at Beale Park on the River Thames at Pangbourne, near Reading during the August Bank Holiday weekend, 28 - 30 August 2010. With over 450 visiting boats booked â a lovely riverside campsite â and exciting exhibitors IWAâs 2010 Beale Park Festival is promising to be an event to remember.
