Tony Hales CBE, Chairman
Tony is chairman of Workspace Group plc and NAAFI Ltd. He was previously chief executive of Allied Domecq
and a non-executive director of HSBC Bank plc, Welsh Water plc. Age 60.
Richard Bowker CBE, Vice Chairman
Richard is the group chief executive of National Express Group Plc, a leading international transport
business. The former chairman and chief executive of the Strategic Rail Authority, he is also a board member of
the Countryside Alliance, a trustee of the Settle Carlisle Railway Trust, the deputy president of the Heritage
Railway Association and a member of the Business Development Board of SCOPE. Richard is also a keen boater
having cruised extensively around the network on his own boat. Age 42.
John Bridgeman CBE, TD
John is a former director general of Fair Trading, Member of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission and
previously was chief executive of British Alcan Aluminium plc. He is Visiting Professor in Management at the
Universities of Keele and Surrey and an independent consultant in corporate strategy, competition policy and
consumer affairs. He is the chairman of the Horseracing Regulatory Authority, of the Direct Marketing Authority,
of the Audit and Standards Committees of Warwickshire County Council and the Warwickshire Police authority.
Age 53.
John Bywater
John retired as a board director of Hammerson plc, a FTSE 100 property company in April 2007 and has taken
up the post of managing director of Caddick Developments, a small property developer based in Yorkshire. He is
an independent director of Workspace Group plc, the leading provider of affordable commercial property to
small and medium enterprises, and a board member of the West Bromwich Building Society. John is also on the
advisory board of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, one of London's leading orchestras. Aged 61.
Maggie Carver
Maggie is a former financier and non-executive director of a number of companies, mainly in the media
sector, including Channel Five Television Group Ltd. She is currently a non-executive director of RDF Media
Group PLC and Managing Director of Milton Keynes Mobility Ltd, a business selling product of access issues.
Age 44.
Dr Jon Hargreaves CBE
Jon joined the Board on 1 April 2008 to represent Scottish interests after extensive experience in the
water industry, most recently as Chief Executive of Scottish Water. He is also chair of the British Waterways
Scotland Group. He has had 34 years experience in the water industry together with experience in international
markets. Prior to joining Scottish Water, he was Chief Executive of East of Scotland Water, Managing Director
of Northumbrian Water Ltd, Managing Director of ENTEC Europe Ltd and Managing Director of Northumbrian
Lyonnaise International. He graduated BSc in Applied Biology and was awarded a Doctorate from Durham
University. Age 58.
Nigel Hugill
Nigel is chairman of Land Lease Europe and former managing director of Chelsfield plc (both major
property and development businesses). He is a member of the General Council of the British Property Federation
and is a member of the Independent Transport Commission. He sits on the Review Panel advising on the Foundation
of Communities England, is a fellow of the Royal Society and a Trustee of the Architecture Foundation.
Age 50.
Eric Prescott
Eric Prescott, is the former president and managing director of Alstom UK and other infrastructure
companies. Eric is a trustee of a number of charities working with disadvantaged children and young offenders.
As a member of the CBI's President's Committee, he has worked on climate change and sustainability issues.
He is a keen angler with 45 years experience of fishing the UK's canals. Age 51.
Pommy Sarwal
Prodaman Sarwal, financial adviser and non-executive board member of the Port of London Authority and
the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust. He has wide-ranging financial management experience of both the private
and public sectors and is a former corporate finance partner at Deloitte and Touche for whom he is a retained
consultant. Prodaman has a keen interest in heritage and conservation. Age 57.
Duncan Sutherland
Duncan is managing director of Inpartnership. Previously he was director of City Development for Coventry
City Council and achieved many city centre projects including Coventry Canal Basin. He has also worked at
Inner City Enterprises plc, was Chief Executive of the EDI Group Ltd and has been involved in national
organisations such as Historic Burghs Association of Scotland Advisory Council and was an executive committee
member of the Scottish Council for Development & Industry. Age 57.
